SwineCast 1174, At The Meeting - Vaccine Dose, Timing Matters in a PRRS Fight

SwineCast 1174 Show Notes:
  • If a modified live vaccine is one of your weapons against a significant PRRS break, using the labeled dose at the right time is critical. Yet this science-based fact is not always followed.
  • Dr. Mike Roof, Iowa State University, talks with the ATM team [Dr. Montserrat Torremorell (College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Minnesota), Dr. Gordon Spronk (Pipestone Veterinary Services), and Dr. Tom Wetzell (Swine Veterinary Consultant)] about why proper dosing of PRRS vaccines is so important in reducing the impact of a PRRS break [audio].
  • 'At the Meeting', Honoring Dr. Bob Morrison is a podcast sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health USA Inc. In each episode, veterinarians and other swine experts join the podcast to discuss the most recent topics in swine health and production.

SwineCast 1083, ATM - Conversations on African Swine Fever Detection, Vaccine Testing, and China Market Optimism

SwineCast 1083 Show Notes:
  • This 'At The Meeting' Honoring Dr. Bob Morrison conversation comes after the Leman China Swine Conference held in November 2019 in Wuhan, China. While African Swine Fever is still very much a concern world wide, there was still lots of optimism at the Leman China Swine Conference due to the large opportunity for profitability.
  • Dr. Montserrat Torremorell (College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Minnesota), Dr. Gordon Spronk (Pipestone Veterinary Services), and Dr. Tom Wetzell (Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica) are joined by Dr. John Deen (Professor, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Minnesota), where they discuss the trip to China and what they learned about African Swine Fever.

SwineCast 1069, What Are Custom Vaccines? How Do they Work? And What Is Needed To Make Them?

SwineCast 1069 Show Notes:
  • Keith Wilson, DVM, senior professional service veterinarian at Boehringer Ingelheim, shares how custom vaccines are created and what pork producers should expect when custom vaccines are needed on their operations.
  • "Adjuvants are the biggest variable that impact vaccine performance," said Dr. Wilson. "Nearly everything else within a killed vaccine is fixed, such as the antigens and routes of administration."
  • Unlike commercial killed vaccines, custom-made vaccines give producers and veterinarians the option to select an adjuvant that can help solve their herd’s health challenges. Determining the optimal adjuvant to use in a vaccine is critical, because different adjuvants have different abilities when triggering immune responses.
