SwineCast 0427, WPE - Legislative Alert With Action Requested

SwineCast 0427 Show Notes:
  • The Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HAACP) concept is not broken, so why is Congress trying to fix it?

National Pork Producers Council’s Dr. Jan Greiner brings us up to date on current legislative activity that expands the U S Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) investigative powers on your farm and feed processing facility.

In the name of food safety, traceability, and bioterrorism, well-meaning members of Congress are drafting the H.R. 2749: Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009. This act proposes an authority which the FDA is not capable of administering. If passed, your record keeping requirements will increase to accommodate an existing lack of interagency communication.

Considering our Nation’s economic uncertainty and the financial crisis our producers are enduring, this is not an appropriate time to introduce this bill. Do we have time to address our government’s concerns?
