I've Found a Perfect Job Opportunity...Now What?
So, I’ve found the perfect agriculture career opportunity - Now what do I do? The answer to the question seems obvious. Step one. Make sure my resume is up to date. Step two. Draft a cover letter. Step three. Submit the application. Step four. Wait, and hope for the best. If you are like most job seekers, this is the way you go about applying for new jobs. But, if you are looking to make a step out from the crowd - you might try a few other tricks!
Once you’ve located what you think to be the perfect opportunity - do some brainstorming about who you know that might have a connection to the company. Is there someone in your personal network that can make a call on your behalf? This is one tried and true tactic that will help you get the interview.
Okay, so let’s assume your network has no connections with the company - then what? Social networking has provided some great venues for people searching. Simply click on over to Facebook and LinkedIn. Perform a search for the company name and see who pops up. If you locate someone that has connections to the department you seek employment in - do not hesitate to make a connection with them. Ask to set up a time to chat about the agriculture industry, you’ll find most people to be very responsive and willing to lend a hand. Just be sure to provide valid evidence that you are qualified for the position. Spamming people to dig your way in via connections is a hurtful strategy.
If this is in fact a career area you are very passionate about, then you should do a little self evaluation. Are you positioning yourself as an expert in the field? Do you have a blog where you share insights about this particular industry sector? This is one way to really brand yourself as a leader, plus it gives a hiring manager insight into your personal motivation. Do you share relevant articles and factoids with your friends on facebook? Again, this shows you are truly passionate about the field, and you aren’t willing to hide it.
There are innumerable ways to combine your expertise, experience, network, and online media to stand out from the crowd. In today’s job market, you cannot afford to rely on simple resumes and hope, in order to secure the job. Flex your muscle - and prove that you’re willing to go the extra mile to step out.
